{Spoilers be ahead.}
I first watched it Saturday afternoon, with great anticipation. This episode dumped the usual five-minute recap aside and plunges right in to a flow much like that of the manga.
Merlo {also known as Marlo, take your pick} and Hitch make their appearances. I don't think Hitch was that pretty in the manga, but in the anime, she's quite so. Merlo, on the other hand, doesn't look as sharp as he did in the manga.
However, the most important part, their personalities, were kept the same: Hitch as the snide, somewhat heckling commentator, and Merlo as the righteous, dutiful man with a strong sense of justice.
You might remember that episode 22 had several extra scenes, all of which are canon as they were written by Isayama Hajime, author of the SnK manga. 23 also has some, and again, all are canon.
The first is a good one. Merlo catches some Military Police selling official equipment to black market handlers. When he calls them out on it, he ends up getting hit. Before the worst blow can land, who steps in but Annie? Hitch also follows suit.
Scenes ends with Merlo's inner struggle, and I liked this one, as it developed the characters of some in the MP a little more.
Afterwards, the flow rejoins that of the manga as Armin sneaks out from a dark alley in order to convince Annie to 'help Eren escape'.
{You'll remember that Eren is to be turned over since the mission failed horribly.}
Annie, after much back and forth, finally agrees--while slipping a key silver ring on her finger.
Armin, Annie, Eren, and Mikasa walk through town, and it is revealed that Jean is pretending to be Eren at the moment. Because Jean has the same evil glint in his eyes, it seems.
When the quartet reach an underground passage, it is soon realized that only three were actually advancing into it. One, namely Annie, had frozen at the stairs.
We'll just say that Eren flips out a little, and Armin desperately tries to convince Annie to come into the underground passage.
{Why won't Annie go in? Remember, this tunnel, as it goes further, is completely underground and thus will get pitch dark. Titans cannot operate in the absence of sunlight, meaning Annie could only remain human and thus would be more vulnerable to any potential attack.}
But Annie refuses, in which the conversation diverts into the suspicions that Annie is indeed the same Female Titan that killed Squad Leader Dita Ness, Sys, several flanks of the previous mission's formation, and four members of the Special Operations Squad.
At one point Mikasa, tired of the pointless coaxing, draws her blades and issues a threat towards Annie.
'I'll tear you to pieces once again...female type Titan.'
And Annie? Annie...laughs.
Now, the manga fans all in a fuss need to calm down on this a little. In my opinion, the laughing is perfectly fine. It's the exaggerated flush that surprised me, as that sort of thing is normally saved for...other types of series. Looking at Isayama's sketches, I prefer his version, but all the same, I don't believe this scene is as big a deal as some are making it to be.
Let's analyze the meaning behind why Annie laughed, shall we? One of the reasons is that she's relieved that she doesn't have to keep lying anymore. Another is that she's realized that now everyone knows that she's the one that killed all those troops. There's also a few others, but I don't have time for that right now. Isayama himself said that he wanted to include, quote, 'sadness, shyness, openness, mixed with guilt, lonesomeness, and fear.' He also stated that even he thinks it's excessive, and he said that he still likes the original scene in the manga as well. In the images for this blog, I included the original scene from the manga and the sketch of the extended scene that Isayama Hajime himself drew.
I liked Isayama's sketch of the scene, but the crying was omitted in the real deal and the blush exaggerated, and that's my only complaint.
Still. After Light Yagami--I mean Annie gets the chuckles out of her system, Armin fires a smoke signal, after which a great many townsfolk leap into action, restraining Annie and even pulling a cloth into her mouth so she cannot bite her tongue.
{Shingeki no Parkour is a popular joke with this scene, if anyone caught it.}
But remember that pretty silver ring I mentioned? It has a blade in it.
Mikasa notices, and in a split second pulls her two childhood friends away from what quickly becomes a freaking explosion as Annie transforms into the Female Titan.
Fin.
...Aaaand that's a wrap! Next episode: Eren VS Annie: the rematch! Hanji and Pastor Nick'll probably get their heartwarming scene in episode 25 by my calculations. {Manga readers may catch my sarcasm.} I can't wait for that one, assuming it's even in this season.
{I think so, since it happens right after *spoiler omitted*}.
Thanks for reading. Anything I got wrong, feel free to both correct and slap me.
This is the anime's version, just one slide though.
